Where you can insert styled text on Signal
Signal is plain end-to-end text, so styled Unicode is kept exactly in your messages, profile name, the About field and group names — nothing is stripped.
Styled Unicode usually works in these spots:
- messages
- your profile name
- your About section
- group names
Our tip — style your profile name, your About and your messages freely; the @username only takes basic letters and digits, so it can’t be styled.

Does styled text work everywhere on Signal?
Not always — it depends on the field. Some spots accept styled Unicode, others keep their own in-app fonts. Check the list above and preview with Safe Mode.
Why do some characters show as squares on Signal?
Some devices don’t have the glyph, so it appears as an empty square (“tofu”). ETeext’s Safe Mode swaps the riskiest characters for readable ones.
Is this real text or an image?
Real Unicode text — you can type, paste and edit it on Signal. It’s never an image, so it stays selectable and searchable.
